Institute of Biosciences and Technology - Houston Campus

Set amid the Texas Medical Center in Houston, the world’s largest medical complex, Texas A&M’s Medical Sciences Ph.D. program housed in the Institute of Biosciences and Technology provides a close-knit, collaborative setting to prepare you to tackle some of science’s toughest questions.

Our doctoral program provides a flexible and interdisciplinary curriculum across the diverse biomedical research areas of the Institute of Biosciences & Technology (IBT) faculty. The unifying theme of research at the IBT is to utilize state-of-the-art technologies to solve problems relevant to human and animal disease, emphasizing translating discoveries into therapeutics, diagnostics, and analytical tools.

COLLABORATIVE LEARNING & RESEARCH

In a typical department at most universities, the faculty work in the same general area of research. But by taking advantage of the wealth of nearby colleagues at Baylor College of Medicine, Rice University, UT-Health, and MD Anderson Cancer Center, as well as world-renowned hospitals like our primary clinical affiliate in Houston and the #1 ranked hospital in Texas, Houston Methodist, IBT research programs can assemble inter-institutional training teams.

Many of the thesis committees of IBT students include faculty at neighboring institutions, and our faculty serves on thesis committees at these other institutions.

Our neighbors are only a 5-minute shuttle ride or a 15-minute walk away! Our Ph.D. program offers informal but extensive instruction in a wide variety of research laboratories, with close contact between the student and faculty advisors.

Doing your graduate research here at the IBT merges the best elements of two worlds: a small community of excellent faculty and fellow students in a welcoming atmosphere and the unparalleled biomedical research opportunities at the Texas Medical Center.

Opportunities, Biotechnology Track & Financial Support

We are confident our Ph.D. program will provide a broad spectrum of exciting research opportunities and prepare you for a successful career upon graduation. We strive for an average graduation time of less than five years to earn a Ph.D. Our students experience both the structure of a formal classroom setting and the freedom to conduct their own research.

Apart from several required foundational courses, our students have extensive elective course options to shape their education to meet their vision for their future careers, including classes offered at our peer institutions through the Gulf Coast Consortium.

Furthermore, students admitted to our program have a stipend to support them throughout their training, health insurance, and tuition coverage. The IBT doctoral program is designed to train a student for a lifetime of scientific endeavor across a full spectrum of biological and biomedical questions and for the ultimate setting in which the student aspires.

For those preparing for a career in biotechnology or biomedical entrepreneurship, our unique Biotechnology Track provides specialized training in commercializing scientific discoveries to make a difference in patients’ lives.

If performing cutting-edge research on challenging biomedical problems to make an impact matches your vision for your life, apply today!
