Research Interests
Dr. Pandita earned his Ph.D. from Panjab University in 1980. He held faculty appointments at Columbia University in New York, Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri (Tenured Associate Professor), The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas (Tenured Professor) and Scientific Director of the Radiation Oncology Department at the Houston Methodist Research Institute and Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology in Radiation Oncology, Weill Cornell Medical College, New York, NY, USA, during 2014-2019 where he directed a research program focusing on DNA repair and radiotherapy. He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2013 and is the past Chairman of A-T Workshop 2012 (ATW2012) and A-T Workshop 2019 (www.atw2019.org) international meetings. He serves on multiple editorial boards and a chartered member of the NIH Study Sections. His research employs both genetic and biological approaches to study the relationships between DNA sequence, chromatin structure and sensitivity to ionizing radiation. The long-term goal of his research program is to understand the mechanistic role of chromatin structure in regulating cell survival response to ionizing radiation and chemical-induced DNA damage.
