Dr. Thomas Kent Named to Super Doctors Legacy Hall of Fame
Most research institutes are known for what happens at the bench. Dr. Thomas A. Kent, MD, also carries a record that lives in the clinic. The Welch Chair in Chemistry Professor at the Institute of Biosciences and Technology (IBT) at Texas A&M University has been selected to the 2026 Texas Super Doctors list, and he reports inclusion in the Super Doctors Legacy Hall of Fame for 15 consecutive years of selection.
According to Super Doctors, his name will appear in the December 2026 issue of Texas Monthly and online at superdoctors.com. The program is in its 23rd year of recognizing physicians in Texas. Super Doctors states that there is no charge to be listed.
A Physician-Scientist in the Texas Medical Center
Dr. Kent's career does not sit on one side of the research–care divide. At IBT, he is Welch Chair in Chemistry Professor in the Center for Genomic and Precision Medicine and the Department of Translational Medical Sciences at Texas A&M University Health. He is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Chemistry at Rice University and holds appointments in the Stanley H. Appel Department of Neurology and the Department of Radiology at Houston Methodist Hospital and Research Institute.
That combination matters for how IBT tells its story. Super Doctors is a clinical recognition. Dr. Kent's laboratory and faculty roles place him among basic and translational scientists in Houston. Together, they describe a physician-scientist who works at the intersection of chemistry, neurology, radiology, and institute research—not as separate identities, but as one career across the Texas Medical Center.
What 15 Years on the List Means
Being named a Super Doctor once is an honor. Fifteen consecutive years, and Legacy Hall of Fame status, is a record of sustained selection over time. Dr. Kent shared the recognition with IBT Communications as something meaningful clinically—especially for a faculty member whose primary academic home is a research institute.
For students, trainees, and colleagues, the listing is a reminder that IBT faculty include investigators whose work is known not only in scientific circles but also among peers in clinical practice.
